Value of SASE: Mitigate Threats to Data Security
Editor's Note:
This is the fourth post in our six-part series on the value of SASE and how companies are driving real business value through their security.

Now, onto Part 4:
Often, when vendors talk about SASE, they focus on access—how to get people safely to the resources they need on the web, in cloud apps, or in private data centers. That’s crucial, but it’s only half of the picture. Equally important is what do you do once people get to those resources. Especially intellectual property (IP) or sensitive data that is subject to statutory or industry mandates to be controlled.
During the pandemic, many organizations learned this the hard way. After scrambling to get newly remote employees connected, their auditors eventually tapped them on the shoulder reminding them not to forget that they still had to keep information safe even in the midst of a global crisis.
Ensuring that you can maintain control over such data, whether it’s a spreadsheet that has been downloaded to a laptop or a document stored in Office 365, and can prevent it from being leaked or stolen requires having strong data security controlled baked in from the start.
At Forcepoint, our unique Data-first SASE platform incorporates our highly automated Forcepoint Data Loss Prevention (DLP) technology which was positioned in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant nine times. Enabling people to securely get to—and use—sensitive data anywhere is what it’s all about in today’s hybrid world.
Here are several examples of how this data security is enabling organizations to do business faster and more effectively.
CPP Group: DLP
Terabytes of data flow through organizations on a regular basis and separating risky behavior from the day-to-day routine is mission critical for any effective data security policy. CPP Group turned to Forcepoint to get this granular visibility.
After deploying the Data Loss Prevention (DLP) solution, CPP Group’s security team was instantly able to see where and how data was being shared across the company. The platform enabled the security team to identify unsafe trends – such as data being shared in a spreadsheet via email or uploaded to an external website – and weed out false positives.
Business Value: Out-of-the-box data security policies enable the financial institution to adhere to a variety of regulations for data that travels between different countries.
GG Group: DLP
Highly competitive industries face corporate espionage attempts that could swing the success of a company. GG Group, which works closely with proprietary technology from automotive manufacturers, understands that protecting its customer data is nearly as important as producing the components themselves.
The company first adopted DLP after seeing Forcepoint’s platform identify different types of intellectual property across the organization – its “crown jewels,” such as source code and schematics. The policies were configurable at a global level from a central location, allowing GG Group to adapt its data security strategy in countries with a well-known risk of data theft so that it could identify and mitigate risky behavior quickly.
Business Value: GG Group leveraged self-remediation pop-ups to educate employees on safe data-sharing practices, and customized data security policies to the unique risks of each region.
Fortune 100 Telecommunications: DLP
Innovation moves quickly and for this Fortune 100 telecommunications provider, data security needed to be just as agile. It needed to strike a fine balance between working safely and enabling productivity.
Using DLP, the company was able to identify and categorize data as high risk of being stolen via insider threats or that it wouldn’t want to fall into competitors’ hands through a data leak. It immediately saw a 34 percent reduction in sensitive data movement, while still maintaining a free and collaborative workspace.
Business Value: The telecommunications provider blocked hundreds of thousands of data violations in the first 60 days of using the DLP, mitigating millions of dollars in potential risk.
Building an Effective Data Loss Prevention Program
Data comes in all shapes and sizes – and with a remote workforce, access can come from many different locations. Maintaining strong policies for data access and usage is key to preventing a data leak or breach and DLP helps companies implement them.
